Shrimp Crab Cakes with Paleo Mark




Mark’s back in the garage to throw down some Shrimp Crab Cakes. These are one of my favorite appetizers, but they can easily act as a main course or a midnight snack. I recommend cooking off a few dozen, buying a pack of Oreos, dumping the Oreos in the trash and stocking the package with Shrimp Crab Cakes. Be sure to stack them upright, just like the Oreos and store them in your fridge. Then, when your sweet tooth starts screaming, you go to the fridge, reach into the package, and smack your taste buds with some satiating protein! That’s what I do, but do what works for you 😉

Whut? Whut? I’m sitting (haven’t installed the standing workstation yet) in my new office, looking out into the pine forest and loving life. The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of little sleep, hard work, and adventures aplenty, but we have finally arrived in our new home and it feels good. We’ve traded whispering traffic for whispering pines and our sand shovels for snow shovels in an attempt to improve our quality of life and provide a fun foundation from which to raise “The Jo” and “The Bro!”.

We have a lot of pots on the stove, but the main focus for the next two months will be dialing in the new website so that it’s June first launch will be something you’ll tell your friends about. My goal is to provide the foremost resource on cooking and nutrition and to do it in a way that make cooking fun and leaning out a breeze. We have just under 200 videos with accompanying recipes on the site right now and will surpass the 200 mark by June first.

I appreciate your patience as I’ve undergone some life changes and growing pains. As always, it is my goal to post a minimum of two videos and recipes per week and I love the weeks when I can publish five posts. Shrimp Crab Cakes

Ingredient List:

  • 1 pound wild shrimp, pre-cooked and chopped (10P)
  • 1 pound crab meat, inspected for shells (I use claw meat.)(10P)
  • 2 Eggs (2P)
  • 1 cup red onion, minced (1C)
  • Kosher salt and ground pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry dill weed
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry thyme
  • Light olive oil for pan frying. (22F)

Preparation Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients, except olive oil, in a mixing bowl and mix well until uniform.
  2. Heat 1/2″ of light olive oil in a saute pan until it reaches 350°.
  3. Form crab cakes using a cookie cutter mould to the size of your liking, then place in hot oil being sure to lay them away from you so you do not splash your Paleo Nick shirt with oil. Do not overcrowd pan and be sure to keep the oil temperature above 330° at all times.
  4. Cook for 2-3 minutes on the first side, or until egg is set and cake is lightly browned. Then turn over and cook for 1-2 additional minutes.
  5. Remove from pan, immediately season (lightly) with kosher salt, and let rest on a baker’s rack until all cakes are cooked.
  6. You can reheat them in the oven for a minute or two if necessary if serving several at once and some have cooled.

Proteins: (12)

Pre-cooked shrimp and crab are both 1.5oz per protein block. We have 16oz. of each, so I assigned 10 protein blocks to each pound.

Eggs are one protein block each, so two protein blocks for the two eggs.


Raw onions are one cup per carbohydrate block, so one carb block.

Fats: (21)

Olive oil is 1/3 tsp. per block. As long as you keep your oil hot, the cakes will not absorb very much oil. I am going with 1/3 tsp. per 1.5oz seafood. Keep your oil hot and you’ll be in the Zone regarding protein and fat.
