I just finished reading Jeff Olson’s book The Slight Edge. It is a deep read with statistics, motivation and calls to action that will truly transform your way of thinking. I’ve read a lot of good books in my day, but if I had to recommend one book for setting your mind straight on what it takes to be successful, this would be it.

The gist of the book is that the difference between success and failure is only slight. The daily disciplines that will lead to success are easy to do and they are easyย not to do.

As I venture into the uncharted waters of business and life, I am always looking for an edge. The edge could come in the form of seeking advice, in the form of working all night long, or in the form of hiring a consultant. However, where I’ve found the most success is in reading books. I have the chance to put new concepts into practice on a daily basis, so what I read I can translate into action almost immediately. Jeff explains a concept called “Study, Model, Do.” It has to do with studying a subject, modeling your behavior after a mentor, and then doing. The critical part is theย doingpart. We can fall into “Paralysis By Analysis,” but I’m more a fan of “Ready, Fire, Aim!” I don’t know what is the best advice I could give you, but I know that there’s power in doing. The plan doesn’t have to be perfect, but the plan has to be started. As I’ve said before, “the hardest thing to get is going.” Once you’re on your way, then you’re on your way. My advice to you today is to purchase Jeff Olson’s book and start reading it.
